Most of the time it's a passive effect and canon isn't really specific about how blatant it is mentally, so we can play it by ear depending on the tone of their meeting I suppose? By all means, demand answers.
And I'm a-okay with China being caught out. She needs to be caught in uncomfortable situations to grow, but regrettably being outright threatened is more like to make her dig her heels in, so it'll be an interesting balance.
