China Sorrows is a recurring character from the Skulduggery Pleasant series. She's an information broker, a collector of magical books, and a master of sigils and symbolwork.

the physical |
the mental |
China is a tall, slender, woman, about six feet in height, with hair as black as sin and eyes the blue of a summer morning sky. While she does enhance her beauty magically, her family has bred for both power and appearance, and she has an exceptional foundation on which to build. She has a sweet voice, and her accent, while not strong, is noticeably Irish. She moves gracefully, only ever careless when she's being artful, and her body language is usually calculated.
Her fingers curling in toward her palms is a threat; standing with her hands away from her body generally indicates peaceful intent. |
China's first interest is China, first and foremost, and truth be told she prefers books to the vast majority of people. For the most part, she thinks of situations according to what she can get out of them, and she doesn't precisely care what she has to do to get what she wants. What deters her are primarily consequences, not moral standards. She calculates, she manipulates, she lies if she really must, and very occasionally she is given to temper. There is, yes, a small part of her that has squishier feelings, but usually it's well-contained.
"Kindness suits you."
"Really? I think I'm quite allergic to it." |
the magical |
the interpersonal |
China is an Adept sorcerer of a little over four hundred years. Her discipline, her specific area of magical study, is the language of magic. It's a symbolic, not spoken language, and its limits are the user's vocabulary and imagination.
The passive effects of her magic include but are not limited to exceptionally steady hands and sharp eyes, and a subconscious, instinctual grasp of the best way to arrange sigils for her desired result.
China's entire body is covered in magical tattoos. They're invisible except for when she's using them or consciously reveals them; when they are visible, they are simple black ink. Some, such as those for magical combat, need to be activated, and some are simply passive, such as those which contribute to personal climate control. |
When China is not busy manipulating, and thereby presenting a more or less chameleonic front, she tends toward sarcasm and a variety of barbs, both veiled and not. For the most part she simply doesn't care about other peoples' feelings, or in fact other people at all, but there are a growing number of exceptions. She does have a curious nature, but what piques her interest isn't always what one would expect.
In her home world, one set of China's tattoos has the effect of making people love her. While the strength of it varies, she's generally accustomed to being able to sway others in that manner. In Eudio, this effect has been removed owing to its coercive nature, but the imperious attitude and expectation of being obeyed remain. She's adjusting. |
